Our investigation at Sloss Furnace in Birmingham, AL. This was a fantastic opportunity for us and
our Jr. Investigators as well. Thank You Sloss Furnace and Druid City Paranormal for having us
along. Sloss Furnace is a 50 acre blast furnace no longer in working order. Donated to the city of
Birmingham in 1971 by the Jim Walter corporation Sloss Furnace is now a historic landmark.
Famous for it's pig iron and quality Steele products many if not all the workers who worked in this
blast furnace also lived in the mill village which was once located near the abandon mill. All that
stands of the old mill village is a small shack style house also known for it's paranormal activity.
Sloss Furnace has been featured on many television shows to include "Scariest Places on Earth" and
"Ghost Adventures" and many other documentaries and books.
These photo's where captured by part-time investigator and historian John Mark Poe. The photo on the left shows
an odd floating material. It has mass to it and is dense so I ruled out the possibility of it being dust. However in the
second photo on the right it material is gone. These photos where taken only milli-seconds apart. Currently we have
this evidence labeled as inconclusive.
Left:This photograph has been digitally
enhanced so that you can view the differences
in light and see that the strange green glow is
prominent enough to block out the light behind
it. While this could be ruled as simple camera
shutter it's never the less a strange photo
since there is no green light for the camera to
detect.
Back to Investigations
Our investigation at Sloss Furnace turned up quite a bit of paranormal activity from voices of both men and
small children in the boiler room location. To the sound of a telephones and working machine sounds. Upon
entering the boiler room almost right away, As I went up a small cat walk to one of the wheel locations I felt
something pull on my arm in a downward direction. Shocked I asked if anyone else had every experienced
that in that location when I was informed that the boiler room is one of the more active areas of Sloss.
EVP's from this location can be heard on the
EVP page of this site. One of our Junior Investigators
experienced a push while walking on the outside grounds. Just outside the tunnel. Jr. Investigator CoCo
seemed to be walking casually when he suddenly stumbled and lunged forward. I was walking right next to
him when it happened and was almost certain he didn't trip on anything. He asked who pushed him as he
did feel a push in the back. Some what shaken but ok he moved on. While I stayed on my guard since
whatever it was that pushed him wasn't felt or known to me. An experience I can't explain.
Other phenomenon reported within the tunnel itself range from voices being heard to footsteps that seem
to walk toward you or behind you. You can see the video footage captured by our team on the
video page.
Our group along side Our Host Druid City Paranormal had a wonderful experience at Sloss and will be back
soon. We'd like to Thank DCP and Sloss Furnace for the opportunity to come in and investigate.
Evidence Gathered:
This small mill house is one of
many that once stood in the mill
village located  just outside the
Furnace. Sloss employees and
there families lived in these small
houses and all household
supplies and necessities for living
could be bought within the village
at general stores. No employee
had a need to leave the location.
These huge generators
located just outside the boiler
room where used to generate
power to turn the huge wheels
inside the boiler room.
These huge wheels where
turned by huge electrical
turbines located in the above
photo. The wheels helped turn
the slag used for making steel.
There are reports of
employees who fail into these
wheels and where riped apart.
The fences where not added
until safety measures called for
better working conditions.
These catwalks where used by
the workers at Sloss to get
them from one location of the
boiler room to another in a
timely manner. They are small
and narrow and EXTREMELY
DANGEROUS!
This photo shows the meters
on a machine used for keeping
up with heat pressure inside
the boiler room.
The photo below shows one of
our Jr investigators sitting inside
the opening of a melter. The
melter's where used to pour the
slag from the boilers.
